Teach in the GE Bookends: How to Apply

Seeking instructors for GE Bookend courses

Contact: Dr. Melissa Beers

The Bookend seminars are a lynchpin of Ohio State's new General Education program. These one-hour seminars explain the GE's role in helping students meet their educational goals, develop intercultural knowledge and build skills for responsible citizenship.

In the Launch seminar, completed during a student's first three semesters, students define their academic and career goals, learn the paths through the GE for developing their interests, and gain foundational skills in intercultural competence that will set them up for success in the GE and beyond. Launch is a complement to, rather than a replacement for, the Survey courses each college has developed for major program students. This course introduces students to an ePortfolio and lays the groundwork for them to continue contributing artifacts and reflections on their professional and personal experiences in college.

The Reflection seminar, taken as students complete the GE program, is a culminating experience that encourages them to reflect on their learning across all GE courses and use the projects, presentations or other artifacts collected in their ePortfolio to demonstrate their personal and academic growth.

Bookend seminars are taught by experienced college instructors with academic backgrounds that span the disciplines of Ohio State. The sections for each seminar are small (typically capped at 19 students) and include students from across the university, rather than clustering them by major or college. Each course follows a shared curriculum designed to highlight interdisciplinarity, provide options for students and instructors to choose assignments and activities that resonate with their interests, and encourage collaboration among students.

All instructors participate in an active community of practice. Instructors meet regularly in small groups for teaching development and support. The full Bookends team meets three times annually, once at the beginning of fall semester, once at the end of fall semester, and once at the end of spring semester. Additionally, structured professional development experiences that support and enhance undergraduate teaching are provided and encouraged throughout the academic year.

The term of employment for Autumn 2023 is August 14 to December 31, 2023. Spring 2024 dates of employment will be January 1 to May 5, 2024.
