John Densmore was born on December 1, 1944 in Los Angeles, California to Margaret and Ray. He was in the marching band and played timpani in the orchestra in school. Densmore went to Santa Monica City College and later to California State University, Northridge where he studied world music with jazz cellist Fred Katz.
The Doors
In the mid-1960s, Densmore teamed up with guitarist Robby Krieger in the group called the Psychedelic Rangers. Soon after, he began playing with keyboardist Ray Manzarek and vocalist Jim Morrison in a band called Rick & the Ravens. In 1965, Rick & the Ravens changed their name to the Doors, with the lineup including Densmore, Manzarek, Morrison, and Krieger. The following year, the Doors became the regular band at the London Fog club on Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. They later became the resident band at the Whisky a Go Go.
After Elektra Records signed them, the Doors put out their first album in 1967. It did really well, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 chart and making their hit song "Light My Fire" popular. In the same year, they released another album called "Strange Days," which was also a hit and reached number three on the chart. Their most successful album came out in 1968 called "Waiting for the Sun," which was their only album to reach number one on the charts. It had a popular song called "Hello, I Love You." In 1969, the band released their fourth album, "The Soft Parade." After that, they released "Morrison Hotel" and "L.A. Woman" in the early 1970s, with the latter being their last album before Morrison died. Later on, the band released "Other Voices" and "Full Circle" as a trio. After the Doors broke up in 1973, Densmore and his bandmate Robby Krieger started a new band called Butts Band.
